It’s My Birthday !!! “42”

christmas-presents_ajm4d6-copy

Friday, Thank God it’s Friday, Friday, FRIDAY !!!

Another candle gets added to the cake. But we are not having cake. Not just yet. I have heard from all of my friends on FB and tonight we are having pizza and cool drinks for supper.

What do you get a man who has everything? I got a gift certificate for my favorite bookseller – INDIGO. I have been plowing through my library of books for the last two months. I need some new material to read.

I bought myself some new duds from my favorite online store. I made a vow to myself that I would get into the gym and start polishing this weight loss that I am experiencing as of late.

So that was the day that was. No singing, no dancing, no drama…

Maybe I will have something wise for you later…

more to come, stay tuned…

Mary and Martha …

luke1

Luke 10:38-44

At the Home of Martha and Mary

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

I once heard a sermon on this passage of scripture. It was usually the womens job to take up caring for visitors and guests while the men sat and talked about things between each other. Martha was busy doing all the housework and taking care of the guests that Jesus had brought with him. Peter, James and John were the usual suspects that went everywhere with Jesus.

Mary on the other hand was too preoccupied with sitting at Jesus’ feet listening to every word he said. She could not be bothered to do the work that needed to be done. Listening to Jesus was more important to her. “Mary chose what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

The other reading associated with today is the reading preceding what happens with Lazarus and what Jesus will do for him. Martha and Mary go to Jesus and tell him that Lazarus has died, and Jesus does a funny thing. He does not immediately go to Lazarus. In the end Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead.

I take from todays scripture reading that maybe we need not be concerned with what we have to do in our everyday lives and just maybe we should be prepared to sit and listen when the teacher appears because that chance may not happen again and if we miss the lesson, will will be less that who we would become after receiving the lesson.

Meditation:

What did you do with your day today? Did you spend time sitting and listening or were you too busy with the goings on of your day to make time to listen? And what can you do for the future in making time for those things that we don’t necessarily make time for.

Friends…

church windows randall

Earlier today, before the meeting started, but after the business meeting ended I was sitting outside the church on the bench and I had a chat with one of my friends who comes to the meeting. People are suffering all over the place. At least he did not drink or drug today, he told me.

He had a job interview as of last week with a new employer and he should have started working for him to date. That was my first question to him as he walked up. “Aw, the guy was a jerk around!” Then he asked the question, kind of rhetorically, “why are some poeple just so fucked up that they would screw with other people’s lives?”

We had been commenting on the latest round of investor scandals to hit the city here and the fact that Bozo Earl Jones bilked millions out of pensioners and retirees and many other investors who, we fear in the coming weeks, are going to become homeless many are destitute because of one man’s greed.

What do you say to questions like this? People on the bubble are really iffy. You try to hold them up and share with them goodness and kindness. But when they go back out into the world, the world chews them up and spits them out.

Madoff – Jones – two very fucked up men who did bad things to many people all for what? Greed, Ego and Stupidity!!! May God have mercy on them, because the people will not offer that same mercy in return.

The seasons are changing – as they are won’t to do. It will not be a good Fall for many people. You never know, how many of these poor souls will go to their deaths penniless, poor, and without a cent left to their name, because some people are just fuckers…

We gave away two beginners chips today at the meeting. I am hoping that at least one of them will remain sober longer than a few hours. The other, I am sure will fare better than the first. Seasons are changing …

Too much time on ones hands, Too much money in the bank, Too much temptation to stir the pot and what do you have but a recipe for a bender.

As the summer progresses, and the heat rises, and temptation stirs, the slipper population grows weekly. But for the grace of God I could be one of them.

Time to call it a night…

Night …

But for the Grace of God…

Matthew 13:36-43

The Parable of the Weeds Explained

Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.”

He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.

“As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

It was another mind bending night of business meeting and the meeting that followed. We are loosing a member of the group. After 3 months of sobriety, our member thinks she needs something different that we can’t help her with. Sad…

I have just 4 more Tuesday’s left to go and I hand over my keys to the boss and say BUH BYE !!!

Tonight’s topic: Slogans…

And the ones I am working with today are “Live and Let Live” and really most importantly “BUT FOR GRACE OF GOD … I COULD BE YOU !!!”

I know what it is like to be 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 years sober. Been there done that. Thank God I am not back there now. I am here. I’ve earned every day of my sobriety through blood sweat and tears…

Thank GOD I am not a newcomer.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

harry-potter_l

The dark and brooding way in which this film is presented gives it a new feel, unlike all the other movies. Some have called this the best of the movie yet so far. I will hold that judgment until the final film is out.I liked the way in which this film was “filmed” and shown.

Firstly, I though that Bellatrix and her cohorts were given way too much screen time, as deatheaters don’t show up much in the book. The whole doing the unbreakable deed at Pettigrew’s with Narcissa and Bellatrix was something. I don’t know if Cissy looks the part, from the way she is described in the Deathly Hallows. Helena Bonham Carter is devilishly evil in her portrayal.  But why does her crew get all this screen time? Are they trying to bait us with an impending battle to come?

harry-potter-and-the-half-blood-prince-11

Did you know that Harry Potter and I share a birthday – the 31st of July. I think that they gave good time to the rest of the story in the book. But refraining from telling more about the romances between Harry and Ginny and the brooding budding relationship between Ron and Hermione was telling.

What DID strike me as odd was the wand fight at the Burrow… Why did Bellatrix and company move on the Burrow. And where did they get that sequence from – because I went back to the book looking for it – I just wondered why they would destroy the burrow and leave the Weasley’s homeless when the burrow plays a pivotal part in the opening of the next movie – or are they going to skip the whole Harry’s Birthday and the wedding of Bill and Fleur in the next installment? Are they giving the Weasley’s an out?

Harry-Potter-and-the-half-blood-prince-photo-3

The whole disapparating visual was great. And the way that they told the story of the memories and the pensieve were well done. It was very close to the telling in the book. The youthful Tom Riddle was well played. The fact that they only placed one group of deatheaters in the castle – at the time of Dumbledore’s death was also telling. They are saving the big battle for the final film. I think they gave us at least a hint of what it will look like when we finally get there.

Malfoy gets a lot of screen time. In his attempt to get the cupboard in the room of requirement working correctly, this portion of the movie played true to the text. The bathroom scene with the wand fight between Harry and Malfoy was very dark and telling as well. There is no friendship between them. And no love lost when Harry uses “Sectumsempra” on him.

Snape is as sinister as he is in the book. The fact that Harry uses the “Sectumsempra” on Snape was in the book, but the visual on screen does not follow the book. The Flight of Snape and party was intertwined with the realization that Snape is the Half Blood Prince and he lets Harry be there, and does nothing to get him the the Dark Lord. Strange – nobody bothered him at this point of the movie. There was no big Dark Lord fight…

The fact that they left out the funeral for Dumbledore leads me to believe that they have a lot of action to get into the next two films. A funeral – the last of the Dursley’s – the leaving of the house and the lifting of the trace – the wedding and the crashing of the Death Eaters – the quest for the horcruxes and the final battle for the castle is going to take up much of the screen time, if the film makers believe that can keep continuity in telling the rest of the story.

They did well with the sea cave – the locket and the drinking of the potion was very true to the book. They did a good job with the visual of the Inferi and the lake of the dead. I went back to my book to try and piece together what they showed in the movie as to what is in the book.

They added film sequences that throw the book continuity out of synch – they did not spend enough time on telling the story as the book reads. They gave minor characters in the 6th book more air time than the book gives them, and in the end, I enjoyed the film.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - The Weasley Clan

I am a little too fond of the Weasley’s and was sad the see their house get burned to the ground. I don’t know why they did that to them, as we know that Molly and Belltrix go head to head in the final battle – maybe the destruction of their house gives Molly a BIGGER resentment to see Bellatrix dead in the final film.

I still adore the final book. They have big shoes to fill in the last two film installments. I would be disappointed if they did not maintain story telling continuity through the last of the Half Blood Prince – they need to give Dumbledore closure and they need to open the next film with a BIG piece of the story – I hope they don’t leave anything major out of the story telling.

Kings: Ep. 112 – The New King pt.2 – Season Finale

david-and-the-king

With William Cross and his son – with Jack’s help, move to make Jack King of Gilboa over Silas, who is still alive, and addresses the people on the radio that indeed Silas is still King and that He will return… People start dying, left and right. Reverend Silas tells Jack that “he is not the one God wants to rise to the throne, there is another …

Cut to location with Silas and David – David agrees to help Silas, but when he sees him sit on the throne, he will leave. As Jack is moved to be crowned one of the cabinet raises the point the the king is still alive, and he is shot dead. The princess and the queen stand in opposition as well, “are you going to kill us too?” Jack has them removed and sequestered.

The King returns walking into the city – with guns pointed at him and tells the army to stand aside. David follows with a tank brigade to back up Silas as he tells them to stand aside as well.

William Cross and party are fleeing to an airplane to get away, but his son Andrew is missing. Jack decides not to flee and remains at the city. Jack’s coronation is stopped and is found … and sequestered …

jack-2-kings

Andrew remains in the city and speaks to the King and Queen, he tells them where his father is – and where his was going. And since everyone is at odds that maybe Andrew can be part of the family now??? hmm… will he???

The King gives an order that David is to be found and brought to the mansion, where they have an arguement after the King has a conversation with a stormy God – who tells him that David is destined to be the next king in Silas’s place.

The king is a very jealous man. And he starts a fist fight with David over what God has told him, he believes that God has been whispering behind his back to David, but David denies he has had any contact with God, so to speak. They beat each other up. The king believes that David has stolen God’s favor from him.

David flees the King to the chapel, where earlier we saw Reverend Samuel get shot to death. (he is still alive) Michelle brings David to the reverend and asks his for help, and the revered tells David that he must flee and the only place he can go where the king won’t find him is Gath.

David and Michelle exchange – I will always love you, and Michelle gives him a ring, and we hear the reverend say the words Husband and wife, because they have been married long before this moment. The baby secret is never shared with David.

Poor Jack is locked in a bedroom and we find next that the king wants to give Jack a living death, to brick him up in a wall. Then the kings assistant brings Jack a woman, whom he cannot stand… And by decree of the King Jack is paired with someone he cannot stand, to produce an heir for the king to raise right !!! Jack begs her not to do this, and she replies, that “Jack is no longer charming as he was, and tells him to just close his eyes and dream of someone who is dead…”Jack will be forced to have sex with a woman to produce an heir – a fate worse than death for a gay man. The king will punish him to no end with this decree…

fade out …

The queen and king are sitting in the mansion where we find that the King has decreed that Michelle is banished from the kingdom for collusion – she is stripped of her title and responsibility for one year … The queen whispers to her that “she would always take care of her.”

Michelle is taken away.

Silas is conversing with the reverend. The King wants to hunt David down and kill him because of his problem with God. The reverend tells king Silas that David and his family are safe and that he will not be able to kill David. The King is clearly at war with David…

So Jack is confined with a concubine.

David flees to Gath to be saved.

Michelle is sent away for a year – there goes the baby.

What will happen to the Kingdom now???

Season Finale …

Matthew 13:10-17

The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”

He replied, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. This is why I speak to them in parables:

“Though seeing, they do not see;
though hearing, they do not hear or understand.

In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:
” ‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
For this people’s heart has become calloused;
they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’

But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

I’ve been waiting for some kind of mystical transformation to occur that would tell me that I’ve “become” a graduate student. I read some of my friends blogs, those men and women who have climbed the ladder of educational learning and I am still well far behind them in the writing department.

I had lunch with my academic adviser yesterday and I didn’t ask him all of my questions, but he did tell me that I should just walk forwards and do my best and the rest would take care of itself.

I have my courses for this next term: Fall 2009

  1. THEO 639 M – Biblical Studies (Gnosticism) – Andre Gagne
  2. THEO 653 – Christology in the Early Church – Lucian Turcescu

I have to pay my fees for this Summer before I can register for the Fall. I am falling short on the money front since I got screwed by Quebec over my summer financial aide. That’s why there is a donation button on the sidebar.

Toosday … Fear …

justin and brian

Hello Peeps…

Sorry I have been MIA for so long. I just haven’t had any material to write about lately, besides the 30 page paper I am writing for my Certificate at the moment. I have been taking full advantage of not having anything to do during my days to sleep – and read like a madman.

I have been re-reading all of my Christopher Rice books in my library as of late:

  • A Density of Souls
  • Blind Fall
  • Light Before Day
  • The Snow Garden – presently reading …

If you have never read the younger “Rice” I highly suggest him. He’s a great writer. I have a love of all things “Rice.” Anne and Son…

It is grey, grey, grey outside. I think mother nature is going to take a dump on Montreal tonight. We could use the rain. But I guess we’ll see. At least it isn’t so humid and miserable – I commented to one of my friends tonight at the meeting that I think Montreal may escape sweltering miserable hot summer days, as there are only a couple more weeks in July – August is just around the corner, so we will be making our way into another season real soon.

This would happen to be my favorite time of the year, this entire shift from Summer into Fall into Winter … Lots of trees means lots of color. And I will be photo documenting the change as it happens here.

I really did not want to stay for the meeting tonight. My sponsor called earlier today to tell me that she was not feeling well, so she would not be going to the meeting. The topic was FEAR …

FUCK EVERYTHING AND RUN

I’ve spent this month keeping my words to myself actively listening to people in the group share each week. It’s not like I haven’t had anything to say, I just haven’t felt the need to share as of late.

A lot comes to mid when I think about fear. Memories I choose not to give energy or power. Things that linger in the back of my mind. They never really leave you, things people say and do, the sting just gets less and less as the years go by. I can’t change them, I can only change myself. And I have done that.

Tomorrow I am having lunch with my Academic Adviser to celebrate my acceptance into the M.A. Program. I wrote to the University web master to tell him of my academic promotion into the MA program. We’ll see if they change my status on the University Blog Page.

My birthday is in 10 days … YAY !!!

I have been on this diabetes diet for now 3 months and I am dropping weight really nicely. I think if I eat any more bananas, that I am going to start swinging around the apartment like a monkey. I have gotten off the soda treadmill in opt for water and crystal light. I eat fresh fruit every day. I stay away from sugary foods. I can’t have them really. But I can eat pretzels and the occasional cup of ice cream.I broke down and bought a box of ice cream sandwiches tonight on the way home. Me so bad… My numbers have been really good over the past couple of weeks. So it’s all good.

Did I mention  my birthday is in 10 days ?

I made it another year, who knew ???

It’s kinda like a great big FUCK YOU to the man (my father) who used to tell me that I was a mistake and should never have been born. One day he will die and we will all mourn his passing. But like I have said before, there is NO love lost there, not one little bit…

any who … more to come, stay tuned…

Kings – “Javelin” July 11 episode

jack-2-kings

Hubby was gracious enough to find me a download of last weeks King’s so I could catch up on the story line to better inform last night’s post. It seems that the King and Jack have one thing in mind, to get rid of David because of his rising star. What seems to be a union of minds now, will end up very differently to the end of this episode.

David is accused and put on trial for treason and Jack is the prosecutor for the court trial. But we find out that others are conspiring to fight this effort. David is whisked away one night to meet with the king’s brother in law and the reverend Samuel, trying to get him out of the country and away from prosecution. The alter-plot is unfolding.  Something is going on behind the scenes. And David disagrees with fleeing – he will stand trial, because as David said, “he only serves his king.”

Jack is called to the jail to visit David, who tells him of the plot against him (A coup of sorts) and the king, and that David can be trusted with such information. The information is passed, but Jack is unmoved. For now…

Cue Michelle and the queen, after a quick doctors visit, Michelle tells her mother that she is PREGNANT with David’s child. The queen is elated for the family, and she will protect her daughter – but the king must never find out about the baby coming, because he will see the child dead first.

david-kings

The trial continues – with the King speaking to David about his treason indictment and that David should fall on the mercy of the king. David protests his innocence as the trial ends. In the final five minutes of the episode Jack turns on the king and the court, voicing his displeasure with the proceedings and speaks out in defense of David, saying that he is a “Better person than he is and even the King, who is deserving of respect.” The King begins to unravel screaming that Jack and David be taken into custody – that both of them are traitors. The King spits at Jack, “you never had respect you FAGGOT!!!

The King is loosing his love for his son – and Jack’s sexual orientation is getting in the way of the relationship between him and his father …

The gauntlet is thrown down. The King is delirious and screaming as David is taken into custody – they try to get the king out of Unity Hall – where the people are demonstrating in the streets. They are stopped in their tracks.

In the end we find Jack exiting the building and being held by the military guard and the brother in law is waiting for him. They pull their guns and Jack responds “So this is how it is – no trial? The brother in law congratulates Jack for his performance – Jack said he could not go along with the case any longer.  The brother in law says that Jack now has the allegiance of the military and all the generals, and that they should act now …

fade to black …
