Hawaii

Meteorological History Made in the Pacific

kilo ignacio jimena 3 cat 4 hurricanes in the pacificIn the center of this photo sits the Hawaiian Islands. On the Left, Hurricane Kilo, Just to the right of the Big Island is Hurricane Ignacio, and to the far right is Hurricane Jimena. This is a historical satellite photograph because we have never seen 3 – Category 4 – hurricanes spinning at the same time.

Today Typhoon Kilo has passed the international date line, and moves from Hurricane to Typhoon in the far Western Pacific.

Scientists tell us that these storms are not energized by the El Nino which is the warm current that appears in the Equatorial Pacific, these storms and also Hawaii are too far North of this element.

But we do know that what happens on one side of the world has a corresponding and opposing effect on the other side of the world.

El Nino has been known to drastically change weather patterns across the Pacific and North America. And well into the Atlantic.

It is September already and the Atlantic Hurricane season isn’t even off the ground yet. The one storm Fred is spinning off the Cape Verde Islands, and will probably spin into the Atlantic, it is located off 19.4 N and 29.1 W.

China frees 3 Canadian activists after Tibet protest

Canadians, all from British Columbia, were demanding China pull out of Tibet

Three Canadians arrested by Chinese police following a protest at the Great Wall against China’s presence in Tibet have been released.

The British Columbian activists — Lhadon Tethong, Sam Price and Melanie Raoul — left China after their release on Wednesday and flew into Hong Kong.

“It was draining, exhausting, psychologically traumatizing, although we weren’t physically hurt,” Raoul, 25, told CBC News from Hong Kong.

Raoul and Price, both of Vancouver, were arrested Tuesday after they unfurled a 42-square-metre banner reading “One World, One Dream, Free Tibet 2008” in English and Chinese from the Great Wall.

The banner adds three words — “Free Tibet 2008” — to the official slogan of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which began their one-year countdown on Tuesday.

Tethong, 31, was arrested Wednesday. She was not involved in the Great Wall protest, but she spent her time in China writing a blog and posting videos and photos online about what the group calls China’s “propaganda campaign” leading up to next year’s Olympic Games.

Five other activists — two from the U.K and three from the United States — were also arrested and released.

All the activists are part of Students for a Free Tibet, a New York-based group for which Tethong serves as executive director.

Tethong said the group knew their actions on the Great Wall weren’t legal and that arrests were a possibility.

“We knew that was the most likely scenario, but it’s not like it was the goal of what we were doing,” said Tethong, a Tibetan-Canadian who was born and raised in Victoria, but now lives in New York.

“The goal was to raise the issue.”

“Some people might think that’s sort of extreme, but we would say China violating the fundamental human rights of Tibetans and their own people and the cultural genocide of Tibet is extreme.”

Police surrounded Tethong in front of an Olympic merchandise store in Beijing and demanded to see her passport. They brought her into a police station, where they showed her printouts of her blog.

“They definitely took jabs at me for being Tibetan,” Tethong said. “They were saying I have an an accent like a Chinese and I have blood from China.”

We were scared for her
Tethong’s sister, Deyden Tethong, told CBC News that she and her family were scared while Tethong was in custody.

“It was nerve-racking for us,” Deyden said at 12:15 ET, about 15 minutes after learning that her sister had boarded a plane out of Beijing.

“We were very scared for her, but at the same time she keeps saying, ‘I have a Canadian passport, so I know people are looking out for me.'”

Deyden said she was surprised her sister was detained, since she was not part of the group of activists on the Great Wall.

“The activists that were taken off the Great Wall, that made sense,” Deyden said. “It was pushing the boundaries and it was illegal, but my sister, all she was doing was blogging about her feelings … and talking about what she saw and what she felt.”

Raoul’s mother, Valerie, said she is excited to see her daughter again.

“We don’t know when they’ll be coming back to Vancouver, but they know they’ll get a really big welcome,” she said.

Harper Promised to Help
The incident drew international attention, with videos of the Great Wall protest posted on YouTube. Prior to news of the activists release, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Wednesday that his government was working to gather information.

“We’ll be doing everything we can do to help and of course pointing out to the Chinese government — as we’re entitled to do — that such expressions of opinion are a natural part of the human rights that Canadians do expect in this country,” Harper said.

The Students for a Free Tibet group wants Tibet freed from China and say the Chinese government is using the Games to gain international acceptance.

The group also wants the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to push the case for Tibetan freedom.

China invaded Tibet in 1950, and in 1999 declared it to be an “inseparable part of China.” In 2004, a government policy paper said Tibet had always been part of China, and before the Chinese imposed direct rule, Tibet was “even darker and more backward than medieval Europe.”

Flynt: More Congressional Sex Probe Names Coming

 flynt.jpg

by The Associated PressPosted: July 12, 2007

(Beverly Hills, California) Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt reveled in Sen. David Vitter’s admission of a “very serious sin” involving an escort service and said Wednesday he’s got leads on embarrassing sexual activities involving other members of Congress.

Vitter, R-La. issued the public statement Monday after Flynt’s magazine contacted him and said phone records linked him to a Washington, D.C., service that federal prosecutors say was a prostitution ring. (story)

Flynt said he was indignant over what he called hypocrisy represented by Vitter, 46, a social conservative.

“I don’t want a man like that legislating for me, especially in the areas of morality,” he said.

Flynt has offered to pay $1 million to anyone who can show he or she had a sexual encounter with a member of Congress or a high-ranking government official. He said the offer has produced promising tips.

“We’ve got 20-some investigations that all look good,” Flynt said during a news conference at his Beverly Hills office.

“We have got some high-ranking Republican and Democratic members of the Senate and the House,” he told reporters. “If I get just a couple of those phonies out of there, maybe it will be a step forward.”

Flynt provided no names or details about the investigations. His comments conflicted with a press release issued by the magazine that put the number of investigations at “several.”

Vitter, meanwhile, stayed out of sight Wednesday. For a second straight day, the Louisiana Republican was a no-show in the Capitol, missing votes on Iraq policy and leaving colleagues unsure of his whereabouts or his return.

On Tuesday he missed a committee hearing and a lunch for GOP senators attended by Vice President Dick Cheney.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s gone all week,” said Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C.

A knock went unanswered at Vitter’s home in Metairie, a New Orleans suburb, and telephone calls and an e-mail seeking comment were not returned.

Flynt said he was outraged over years of government investigations into his own life, and time he had spent in prison.

“This is payback time,” he said. “I’m not exposing anyone’s sex life. … I’m only exposing the hypocrisy.”

Obama says some have 'hijacked' faith

060922_barackobama_xtrawide.jpg

By STEPHEN SINGER, Associated Press Writer

HARTFORD, Conn. – Sen. Barack Obama told a church convention Saturday that some right-wing evangelical leaders have exploited and politicized religious beliefs in an effort to sow division.

“Somehow, somewhere along the way, faith stopped being used to bring us together and faith started being used to drive us apart,” the Democratic presidential candidate said in a 30-minute speech before the national meeting of the United Church of Christ.

“Faith got hijacked, partly because of the so-called leaders of the Christian Right, all too eager to exploit what divides us,” the Illinois senator said.

“At every opportunity, they’ve told evangelical Christians that Democrats disrespect their values and dislike their church, while suggesting to the rest of the country that religious Americans care only about issues like abortion and gay marriage, school prayer and intelligent design,” according to an advance copy of his speech.

“There was even a time when the Christian Coalition determined that its number one legislative priority was tax cuts for the rich,” Obama said. “I don’t know what Bible they’re reading, but it doesn’t jibe with my version.”

A call to the Washington, D.C.-based Christian Coalition of America seeking comment was not immediately returned Saturday.

Obama is a member of the United Church of Christ, a church of about 1.2 million members that is considered one the most liberal of the mainline Protestant groups.

In 1972, the church was the first to ordain an openly gay man. Two years ago, the church endorsed same-sex marriage, the largest Christian denomination to do so. Obama believes that states should decide whether to allow gay marriage, and he opposes a constitutional amendment against it.

Conservative Christian bloggers have linked Obama to what they call the “unbiblical” teachings of his church. Theological conservatives believe gay relationships violate Scripture, while more liberal Christians emphasize the Bible’s social justice teachings.

Obama trails Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York by 33 percent to 21 percent in the most recent Associated Press-Ipsos poll among Democrats and those leaning toward the party.

Stop the Genocide in Darfur

save_darfur.gif

On Tonight’s Democratic Debate from New Hampshire, questions were asked about Darfur and ending the genocide. The answers were interesting. ONE major suggestion from the panel was to BOYCOTT the Summer Olympics in Beijing China and force the Chinese to stop doing business with Sudan. Since they obtain large amounts of oil from Sudan, this is an important issue. China has repeatedly been called on their record of Human Rights Abuses.

Democratic leaders feel that China could get involved in the issues of Darfur/Sudan and stop the Genocide – by ending their huge demands and their use of huge amounts of Sudanese Oil. They are not the only country who could do something today about Darfur, the world needs to sort out its priorities.

Should we (the World) take that great step and Boycott Beijing in 2008? For more than one reason?

SHOULD the WORLD BOYCOTT

The Olympics in Beijing, China

The Games of the XXIX Olympiad…

Summer 2008 to stop the genocide in Darfur?
Should we hold China accountable as a World Participant
and should we as well, hold world leaders accountable
for their inability to stop World Genocides
all over the Earth!!!

Sunday Politics

060922_barackobama_xtrawide.jpg

I was reading my list today and I noticed that Knotty Boy had a button up for Barack Obama’s campaign. I thought that I would throw myself into the Political game as well. So you will see over on the sidebar a few new buttons and also a much cleaner line to the sidebar. All the images have been resized and shuffled.

I have been a member of the Democrats Abroad program since attending Concordia University since there is a good number of American’s and Ex-pats in the city here. I have written about presidential politics and my disdain for the current administration in great detail over the last few years.

It is important that we find a cause and we support it. I have been a watcher of the Senator from Illinois ‘Barack Obama’ for some time now. Since he made his first appearance on Oprah to discuss his book “The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream.” It was then that Oprah had asked him ‘That Question’ to which he did not reply to as we had wished. But it was later that the Senator from Illinois threw his hat in the ring for the Presidency of the United States of America. I believe that he can win. I believe that he can bring honor once again to the White House. He will make history if he wins the nomination and the Presidency.

On Mr. Obama’s Website ‘Here’ you can get involved, read about the campaign and find your place as a participant in this very important political time. You can register an account, open a blog and donate and also GET ACTIVE in the political process. I wanted to list the important point of Barack Obama’s campaign. These are the issues on his platform.

  • Strengthening America Overseas
  • He has a Plan to END the Iraq War
  • Creating a Health System that works
  • Energy and the Environment
  • Improving our Schools
  • Protecting the Homeland
  • Immigration and the Border
  • Protecting the Right to Vote
  • Honoring Veterans
  • Cleaning up Washington’s Culture of Corruption
  • Strengthening Families and Communities
  • And Finally Reconciling Faith and Politics

08_logo2b.gif

So go take a look at the site, for all of you who participate in Presidential Politics. It is time for a change, and I believe that Barack Obama is the man to make those changes that so badly need to take place. We must reclaim America from the abyss. We must get the war mongering animals out of the White House now. We must take back our country and prove to the world that the U.S. can reclaim its place on the world stage as reputable, honorable and an honest nation that deems Peace better than War. It is time to speak up and say YES to Change, and NO to War.
